Panasonic SC-BT730 Blu-ray DiscTM 5.1 Home Theater System
Panasonic SC-BT730 Blu-ray DiscTM 5.1 Home Theater System Review

Summary: A quality, full-featured Home Theater in a Box (HTIB) well worth its current retail price, especially if used with the optional Panasonic DY-WL10 wireless LAN adapter (or hard wired).
Caveats: This HTIB is connected to a 720P 42″ Panasonic TV purchased in late 2007. I have never previously owned a HTIB, so I have nothing to compare it to apart from stereo systems. Used in a medium-sized living room.
I possess average-to-high tech savviness. Several reviewers have had much grief with the wireless rear speakers. Mine worked out of the box, but only after I remembered to insert the digital transmitter into the main unit. I have been drinking throughout this review.
Setup: Assembly and setup were reasonably simple. Connections were very clearly marked. I may or may not have successfully used the auto speaker setup microphone due to my own stupidity.
The sound levels of each speaker are easy to adjust manually, however. Unlike other reviewers, I was able to play normal TV broadcasts through the system speakers by connecting the optical audio out on my cable box to the digital optical audio in (“D-IN 1″) with a Toslink cable (more below!).
Sound: I’m no audiophile, but the system sounds great to my ear whether playing music from an iPod/Pandora, movies on DVD/BD’s, or even Youtube. Full spectrum with excellent bass. The subwoofer really makes the room shake. It needs to be set pretty low most of the time.
The tiny rear speakers produce excellent ambient sounds during movies and hold their own if I use with other sources.
Picture: Bluray discs look very good, as expected, excellent in fact. Upscaled DVD’s also look very good.
Vieracast: You are doing yourself a serious disservice if you purchase this and don’t take advantage of the internet features available with this unit.
You’ll need to purchase a Panasonic DY-WL10 dongle (about today, weeks ago when I purchased) or a wired LAN connection, but there’s a ton of content out there that make it worthwhile.
In short, Vieracast is Panasonic’s proprietary internet streaming service. It currently offers Netflix, Youtube, Pandora (a music service), and a few lesser lights like Bloomberg news, Picasa, and a German news channel, Tageschau (wuh?). Fox Sports and Twitter are still “Coming Soon!”
The Vieracast interface is a little clumsy in appearance and makes annoying chiming sounds as you click between content.
It sometimes takes more than than one attempt to get started (could also be the fault of the dongle or my router or some other piece of hardware), but it’s dropped a connection exactly-only-once.
Regardless, a Netflix account alone makes Vieracast (no fee) worthwhile in view of the numerous and varied “Watch Instantly” offerings. Examples: My father came to the TV show “Lost” a few seasons late, so he recently bought the first few seasons on DVD to catch up.
Well, all but last season are currently available instantly on netflix.
More and more recent offerings are available, lots of kids’ stuff and documentaries, older classics . . . On a whim I googled a list of “the best movies of all time” and found that most of the top 15 were available for instant viewing (“Battleship Potemkim” – er, great!)
There are some negatives with Netflix. Unlike a DVD/BD, the streaming audio doesn’t appear to automatically separate to 5.1, but you can easily use the “surround” and “sound” buttons on the remote to choose the combination of speakers. Still blows your TV speakers away.
I found the video quality of streaming video on a 42″ plasma to be very good (and it transmits 16:9), but it’s not Bluray or even HD. But I’m also old enough to remember when TV nirvana was watching S-VHS on a 36″ tube set. If you’re rockin’ a 60″ set, sit three feet from the screen, and can’t remember the 80’s, your mileage may vary.
Youtube is rife with possibilities that I haven’t fully exploited, mostly because I haven’t had the patience to figure out my account settings for playlists and favorites on Youtube itself. A 12 year old should be able to do things stranger than i can imagine.
You enter your Youtube account name/password and your lists, etc. should appear. One cool thing I managed to do was create extensive playlists (e.g. old live Dead, Zeppelin, etc.) and put them on continuous play. This is very awesome. Video quality is obviously limited by the source (whateva), the sound too, but I’m listening to it right now and it’s pretty good.
Pandora radio is a great internet music service that I have on iPhone. Enter the name of an artist or genre and it will continuously play music from that artist/genre. It’s like an artist/genre specific radio station.
If you have a (free) account as I did, just enter username/password. Sound quality is excellent.
iPod dock: Excellent feature built into the main unit. The interface can be a little clumsy, however, lots of scrolling with the remote if you’re looking for That Particular Song. If you have playlists like the rest of the sane, no worries.
TV Broadcasts: As noted above, and in contrast to other reviewers, cable/satellite broadcasts can be played through the unit’s speakers with a Toslink cable (which costs less than a Big Mac).
I have a cablebox (HD with modern connections) and it took a little experimentation to get it to work. The unit’s instructions read like, well, stereo instructions, and were not particularly helpful. Each must find his own path, but I was easily able to play normal TV broadcasts through the system speakers by connecting the optical audio out on my cable box to the digital optical audio in (“D-IN 1″) with the Toslink cable.
FM radio: Does anyone really care? Well, if you’re so inclined, it receives FM transmissions pretty well, much better than my last (1998-ish) receiver, and has auto pre-sets available (just like a rental car!) Worked well. Also plays SD cards, another useless thing that these things all do. Useless unless you want to subject someone to a slide show, which was a peculiar form of torture back in the day.
Conclusion: This device sounds great and has opened up a whole new world of content on the TV. The four stars is for interface clumsiness, and the remote, which I don’t feel like reviewing but I don’t really like. You can’t go wrong with this unit at the current price point.

Wireless problems!!! – J. Geisendorfer – NC USA
As received the rear wireless speakers did not work. Panasonic email support suggested fixes. By the time they had given up, the unit would not even turn on. Long story short, I sent it back, at my expense, to the warranty center in McAllen, TX. 45 days later it has been returned in working condition. This was accomplished after repeated follow-ups by me, repeated emails from Panasonic (I count 13) saying “We apologize for the delay in responding”, & phone calls from their customer service (no name or contact number was ever given). The system was shipped back in 2 shipments. The first showed up without any notice from Panasonic that it had been shipped. Three weeks later I inquired about the remainder of the system. Seems it had been shipped withing a day of the first shipment, but UPS had lost the shipment. Without notice I was not aware that it had been shipped. Frustration ^%R#$*^!. I’m now 45 days into my 1 year warranty & out shipping costs on a brand new never used unit. I’ll stick with Panasonic TV’s, but never another audio system.

Dual LHT1000B 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System, Black
Dual LHT1000B 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System, Black Review

Not wanting to be without surround where ever I went, I wanted to get a system for my mother’s house. Small size was very important so my options were limmited. I saw this system for and thought it would be worth a try.
I was rather surprised by the bulk and solid construction of the satelites. I was expecting a plasticy glued together feel, but was quite pleased just upon opening the box. The satelites are about the size of the small version Bose satelite speakers, so the size was right. The sub was shockingly small being a little bigger than a shoebox (it looked bigger to me in the picture).
Testing them out in my established spots for my current setup, I tried music (I Ching Symphony) followed by a movie (Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers). With the music, the sound was surprisingly spacious; however perhaps a bit airy and bright. The high ranged music flowed nicely considering the price of the setup.
The DVD was another stoy. In the DTS cut of LoTR, the sub all but begged for mercy. In the opening scene with Gandolf and the Balrog, the sub reminded me somewhat of the sounds you hear from an overzealous 16 year old kid’s car. In short, farty and shaky.
After some consideration, I decided to check the receiver settings. I noticed that the crossover was set to 100 hz. With the satelites bottoming at 120 hz, this is a problem. After bumping it up to 150 hz, I decided to try Star Wars Episode 1. The difference was huge. The roaring of the engines in the pod racer scene was rather exceptional. Noticing that this was a Dolby Digital edit, I decided to go back and try some DTS. Going back and forth between sound edits on several discs, I came to the conclusion that this system doesn’t get along with DTS. The encoding of the LFE (subwoofer channel) in DTS is just too low for the sub in this system. Dolby Digital had little or no trouble.
Overall, this is a hefty bang for the buck. The satelites/center are worth the price of admission. The sub is perhaps the weak link but it does the job. Considering the satelites connect directly to the receiver and all the money left over, a burlier sub could easily be substituted to create very respectable setup. The system as is would be worth at least 3 times as much as what Amazon offers it for. Considering the price, 5 stars is definitely not a stretch.

NAMSUNG AMERICA LHT1000B, BLACK COMPLETE 5.1 HOME THEATER SPEAKE
Dual LHT1000B 6-Piece Home Theater Speaker System, Black Specifications
Enjoy the latest 5.1-channel encoded DVD soundtracks with the Dual LHT1000B home theater speaker system, which includes all the speakers you need to create a complete surround setup. Comprising four satellite speakers, a dedicated center channel speaker for dialogue, and a subwoofer to round out the bass profile, the system is an affordable option for movie fans who want to enjoy the splendor of full surround sound without spending thousands of dollars. Each satellite speaker includes a 2.5-inch midrange driver and a 0.5-inch piezoelectric tweeter to clarify the mids and highs. The center speaker, meanwhile, offers dual 3-inch midrange drivers in addition to its 0.5-inch tweeter, ensuring that dialogue–the most important element in a movie soundtrack–always sounds crisp, warm, and intelligible.
Completing the system is the 50-watt powered subwoofer, which boasts a 6-inch long-throw, down-firing woofer to enhance the bass response. The subwoofer also offers a forward-firing port-tuned enclosure that adds to the low-frequency efficiency. The overall frequency response isn’t as wide as those of more expensive systems, but it still offers a nice range of 50 Hz to 20 kHz. Additional features unique to the subwoofer include two RCA low-level inputs for older systems and a variable gain control.
The entire system wears a black finish that matches similarly hued components and equipment. Listeners will also appreciate the center speaker’s magnetic shielding, which protects the TV from video interference when the speaker is located nearby. The center speaker even comes with a stand to hold it durably in place, while the satellites are wall-mountable using the small keyhole inserts on the back.
What’s in the Box
Four satellite speakers, center channel speaker, subwoofer, center speaker stand, user’s manual.

JBL SCS300.7 Complete 7.1-Channel Home Cinema Speaker System
JBL SCS300.7 Complete 7.1-Channel Home Cinema Speaker System Review

After reading a million online reviews, I bought the JBL SCS 300.5 at BB because of a promotion that included a free JBL Sub10 subwoofer (from the Venue line). Because it is a front-firing sub, I think there’s less potential for booming, and greater detail. It’s also a stand-alone product, not one developed and sold only within a to do this power on my Jesus Christ is I and DNA in HT package. Whatever, it sounds terrific, blending seamlessly with little 300 satellites and center channel. The 300s create an amazingly broad soundstage, much wider than you would expect looking at them. Speaking of looks, these little guys are styling!
Setup is critical. Position the 300s at ear level, toeing in the fronts. I placed the center channel speaker just inside one of those shelf units you used to put your TV on top of with your VCR below — it added a little presence to the center channel output without distorting the sound. Set your subwoofer crossover to 120 Hz (not 100). Make sure your main front left and right speakers are pretty much equidistant from the center channel. If your AV receiver came with a microphone and is capable of auto set up (like my Onkyo TX-SR 703), keep repeating the process until you’re satisfied with the sound. Double check speaker distances, and don’t be afraid to boost or lower output from selected speakers (I had to correct the distance for the center channel and right side surround, lower the level for left front and raise it for the sides, rear, and sub).
Once you’re finished, I think you’ll be impressed with the sound. I love the expansive soundstage, and the seamless panning from one side of the room to the other. Watching action-adventure movies, I feel like my sweet-spot is the center of a cohesive field of action — not like a viewer being bombarded by random sounds from specific speakers. Of course, Dolby Digital EX 7.1 processing undoubtedly helps create the illusion. The 300 satellites are very bright and pure, accentuating breaking glass in an explosion while the sub belts out the blast. Dialogue is crisp and clear, and hasn’t sounded congested or disembodied since placing the center channel at the front of the shelf unit mentioned above.
As for music, perhaps the best thing I can say is that I’m listening to more of it since buying these speakers. What a great combination with satellite radio and DVD audio. I’ve even gone back to listen to CDs of various genres I haven’t touched for years just to hear nuances I was missing before with my full-range speakers — my ear really appreciates having the bass originate from a separate cabinet. It prevents any muddiness in the mid range. That being said, if you prefer a really warm-sounding speakers, mate this system with a warmer-toned receiver than my Onkyo — or at least, it turn up the bass.
Because I’m perpetually curious, I’ve decided to try upgrading the system with other speakers from the Venue line: the dual-5″ center channel Voice and the 5″ Monitors as mains. We’ll see how well they blend with the 300s to produce a 7.1 system.
Either way, if you’re interested in the JBL’s, try to audition them. I heard them at BB immediately after listening to more expensive Klipsch Synergy III’s (and Bose) and was still impressed. If you google the JBL’s, there are about a half dozen decent reviews out there. All agree the speakers are great for home theater, but some expressed concerns about certain types of music reproduction. I’ve been pleased so far, but we’ll see how much of a difference in the Venue speakers make in Stereo and Surround.

Denon DHT-FS3 Home Theater in a Box
Denon DHT-FS3 Home Theater in a Box Review

I’m not a tech guy, but I am a guy who loves TV and wants the best…with in money’s reach. I did have the BOSE 1.2.3. or is it 3.2.1 . Any how I had the BOSE system with the two speakers. I seen this and have been wanting a sound bar for my home theater (which consist of a 73 diamond series DLP, a 360, a PS3, a wii, a comp level 12 down fire sub, and a hd-dvr). For a very brief time I had an onkyo 7.1 system but all the wires is want made me lean to the BOSE and then to this sound bar. So now you see a bit of a background of what I have and want I was wanting. When I first got this it only put out analog sound…which is strange because all my devices, except for the wii, is connected via HDMI (monster cable M series) to my TV and then from the TV to the soundbar via monster cable THX optical sound cable. Everything was connected with a digital source and this sound bar was throwing out fake Dolby sound…Dolby prologic I think is what its called. I did buy some more monster THX optical cables and a monster digital coaxial cable and use all of the digital inputs to connect everything. Finally it’s producing Dolby digital sound. The sound that this thing makes and throws out is a “must hear”. It makes BIG sound, by big I don’t mean loud…I mean BIG…it makes jets sound like they’re flying above the TV (yes roaring after burners and all) and it makes birds sound like life like birds…so much that my field champion lap goes nuts looking for birds. There are some down falls, I would like to see HDMI inputs and an output based on the cost of this…this would also help with an on screen display. I would like to see one of those mics you plug in and it auto calibrates itself…just based off the price…these features should be standard on this. Another down fall that is not the fault of the vender or Denon…I can’t find a DirecTv code to make this thing work…so yet another remote I can lose. If you’re still reading this, you must be wanted advice on helping you make a decision to buy this or not to buy it. If you find this NEW, not refurbished for under 700.00…BUY IT! Buying it used or refurbed is a personal judgment decision that only you can make.
In the box is an HDMI cable, 3…maybe 4 sets of different heights of legs, a remote (that had buttons on both front and back), a user manual that is bigger than my phone book.] and even hardware to wall mount it.
By the way the Sub is worthless if you’re looking for LOUD base that hits and knocks pictures off the wall.

Denon DHT-FS3 Home Theater in a Box Overview
Home Theater in a Box
Not much difference compared to my Toshiba TV speakers – Madhav Buddhi – Sunnyvale, CA USA
When I bought this, I expected that I will get a great sound compared to my TV(Toshiba 37 inch 720p)spekers. But it is a disappointment. I did not see much difference. I tried all configuration settings(room size, bass, treble, surround, stereo, wide). My room size is small(10″ x 10″). sub-woofer created some difference(drums sounded better). Denon DHT-FS3 supports big volume than my TV, but that is not my requirement. I rarely go beyond 50% volume on my TV.
I do not know, if my TV already has a great sound system, but Denon DHT-FS3 did not make much difference.
Both sound-bar and sub-woofer looks good, and constructed well.
It has three digital, one analog input. But does not have HDMI inputs. That is ok for me, at this price(bought for 5/-, refurbished)

Bose Acoustimass 6 Home Entertainment Speaker System – Black
Bose Acoustimass 6 Home Entertainment Speaker System – Black Review

It seems like the first step to be an audiophile is to criticize Bose. I got lost on that path a little bit. I spent six months going around to listen to many others speakers (included Polk and Klipsch). Of course, I heard some decent speakers that sound better than Bose, but they usually cost at least ,000 each. But, for the similar price range Bose is hard to be beaten. I decided to buy it because it always make me smile our of my poker face at Bose showroom (not because of the funny sale guy).
I decided to adopt a set of AM6. People at the store told me that I may have to wait for 45 days. I think, that’s OK. But, I can’t live without some nice music for 45 days. Then, I placed my order for the AM6 and also brought home a pair of an inexpensive Bose 161. The 161 alone sounds very OK for music. Anyway, my receiver is Onkyo TX-SR605S. And my audio sort is the Mac mini optically connected to the Onkyo receiver. I could make my neighbors dance with this set. However, the 161 alone is no good for movies.
45 days later, I got the AM6. So, the pair 161 are now the back surround speakers. With the AM6, I got a 7.1 system. The first Onkyo automatic setup was great for the movies the floor and the walls were shaking. for some reasons, the floor and the walls were still shaking for music too. That is a little too much for me. The bass wasn’t like a strong punch. It was more like a really annoying subwoofer effect from the next room. I was a bit disappointed. However, a month later when I was playing around with the Onkyo remote control, I found that the Onkyo set volume level of subwoofer to -3. I manually changed it to +3. Now, it is a lot better for music. It does sound like what I heard in Bose showroom. The movie sound effect is still cool. I think, the reason that make Onkyo receiver set the volume level very low for Bose speakers, because Bose bass module is not exactly a subwoofer. It also produces some midrange sound, which could mess up Onkyo automatic speakers calibration. One more good thing that I like about the AM6 is, speaker cables are included. I don’t have to worry about what cabel should I use or how much do I have to pay more. But please note that, the center speaker of AM6 is identical with the satellite speakers. So, it could be better of a system that has a real center speaker.

Bose stands behind their products! – Laura Catchpole – Pittsburgh pa
I bought a similar system in 1996. After 8 years of heavy use one of the speakers was sounding a little off. I contacted Bose just to see if I could have it repaired. They sent me a brand new speaker free of charge via fed ex. If you don’t believe me check the ratings/reviews on the better business bureau website. There are similar stories there. I am a loyal Bose customer for life!
